History of the Haitian Diaspora Federation

The Haitian Diaspora recognizes the enormity of the January 12 earthquake and its magnitude of destructions that have brought Haiti and its people to their knees. This catastrophe killed more than two hundred thousand people; destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, government buildings and businesses; rendered over one million people homeless, and crippled the nation’s economy, health and education system.

At this time of great national tragedy, the Haitian Diaspora has resolved to unite its collective voice and resources (financial and human capital) to address the challenges of the reconstruction and the sustainable economic development of Haiti. Under the core principles of unity, transparency, accountability, and responsibility, five organizations have come together to create the Haitian Diaspora Federation. This group includes the following organizations:

  • The Haitian League (THL),
  • National Organization for the Advancement of Haitians (NOAH),
  • Association des Medecins Haitiens a l’Etranger (AMHE),
  • Haitian-American Engineers and Scientists (HAES)
  • The Haitian American Chamber of Commerce (HACC)

The five founding members have created an ad-hoc board and a coordinating committee to help develop the basic organizational framework for the Federation. At the appropriate forum, this group intends to present the Federation to the broader US-based community of nonprofit organizations to gain their support and active participation as members of the federation. It is the intent and fundamental objective of the Federation to be as inclusive and participatory as possible. As outlined in its by-laws, the Federation will develop a governance structure that reflects its values, which will allow all members to have a voice in the directions – strategic and operational – of the Federation.
